Synopsis
- This leveled reader about the river and the organisms it supports is for Kindergarteners at or above reading Level 2 (DRA and Reading Recovery) or B (Guided Reading).
- The last page of the book contains guiding questions and more information.
Teaching Materials
Classroom Implementation:
- Use the book in a guided reading group with your guided reading protocol.
- Have the book available in a library of books at similar reading levels.
Prerequisites:
- Introduce content-specific, unfamiliar words: birds, drink, elephants, fish, flowers, frogs, grass, grows, hippos, plants, river, tree, turtles, water, and zebra.
Extensions:
- Have students draw pictures of a river, including animals that live in or around it.
- Provide the sentence stems “_____ live in the water.” or “____ drink the water.” for students to fill in with another animal they know lives in or near a river.
Interdisciplinary Connections:
- Science: Discuss how animals, plants, and other parts of an ecosystem rely on each other to be healthy.
Climate Change Connection:
- Build students’ sense of stewardship by discussing the need to keep the rivers clean so the animals can live in and drink from them.
